Campeche is an upmarket city on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, that caters well for the tourist. Classy shops with a good selection of stock not commonly found in other centres and good food. The city was founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadores. Later around the 1760's after repeated attacks from pirates the town built Fort San Miguel. Today the fort is now a pre-Columbian museum.
